Review Summary
People generally like the Rock Identifier: Stone ID app for its ability to identify rocks and minerals, aiding in cataloging collections and providing useful information. However, users have significant concerns regarding its accuracy, inconsistency in results, heavy advertisement in the free version, and subscription issues such as automatic charges and difficulties switching plans.
Works like a charm! Love this little app. I use the free version. It does everything I need. I buy crystals at a rock shop. I already know what my rocks are. I catalog them at home and the app is 98% right on the money! When I find a rock in the wild I use the app and it can still correctly identify it. If you love crystals, minerals, or just a rock hound like me this app was made just for you!
VERY neat - does what it says.... had a few choice specimens laying around my backyard I was curious about. if you're the adventurous type this would be great fun. I rarely go out so $30 for a rock hound app I'm rarely able to use is not what I'm looking for. I'm not going to pay for the premium but it's a will put together app and in fact does what it advertised!
Yes. High price for this app, I went through my semi large collection of rocks and jewelry pieces. There are wrong identifications, but you quickly see what throws off the accuracy. I was amused and chagrined to learn my specimens of asteroid were not. It was correct in my nice specimen of moldavite, while also identifying a little ring i had thought was moldavite as a more common specimen. Let me know my fun but inexpensive amber was plastic. Nice to re-identify specimens. Worth it!
It doesn't give a 100 percent accurate identification, seems like it's a generalization of similar rocks from a database of millions of photos of every type of rock, stone or ore. Which is complicated since many rocks look alike yet contain different elements or minerals & share the same elements except for 1 or 2. So it's basically a computer that takes your picture and compares it to every other picture on the web and gives you the majority or best match. As I said it's not 100 % accurate.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. While we strive for accuracy, we acknowledge that 100% precision is challenging due to the similarities. We're continuously updating our database and improving our algorithms to enhance identification accuracy. If you encounter specific cases, please email us at [email protected] with photos.
Great app, shady with subscription options. I did the free trial, which somehow automatically set it to charge me for a full year after the trial ends. I tried changing it to a monthly subscription 2 days before trial ends, and it wouldn't change from the annual, like the button didn't work, so I canceled my subscription instead. I would've loved to do a month for now and spring for the annual later, but it seems like the app railroads you into the annual. Apps like that never get my money, smh.

Best one I've found so far. Can even identify slag. Obviously it's not going to be spot on every single time but I'd say about 75-80% of the time one of the 3 possible suggestions is correct which for this kind of app is impressive in my opinion. I've tried others but always come back to this one. For best results, use natural light and a dark solid background. My favorite part is that it saves your history of everything you tried to identify even if you don't add it to your collection.
It's not easy to identify a stone, but this app does a pretty good job. Occasionally it won't do it, but it could be the quality of the image that I'm submitting. For example, I have some raw nephrite Jade. It is very dark in the Raw stage, and hard to identify without Shining the light right up against it. The App sometimes identify it as Basalt because it is so dark.
Nice to have a. Easy, quick reference for interesting rocks. The database is good. I do wish the app was able to distinguish rocks with blends or veins of differing minerals. The app is not always consistent in its assessment of the same rock from different angles. Overall, I am enjoying the app.
I installed this app on the recommendation of the clerk in a crystal store. It worked great in the store. Just went to use it again, and now I have to pay? No, I am not giving payment info for your 7 day free trial. It was free before! Uninstall. (Especially after reading reviews here about getting charged after canceling within the 7 day window!) Cheap money grab.

This app has some serious issues. When I choose a photo, the zoom function doesn't work right, so you can't center the rock properly. Second, when adding a rock your collection, and you try to add photos, the app maddeningly deleted any previous photos instead of adding them. My main problem was that I found the identifications very general and broad. It will propose three or four possibilities that vary widely, so it's just not very helpful. I just ended up frustrated and getting little help.
