Review Summary
Overall, people like the Board Game Stats app for its detailed game tracking and robust integration with Board Game Geek (BGG), though some users find the interface unintuitive and wish for more features, such as easier expansion management and better filtering options.
The interface is not very intuitive. It's extremely frustrating to log games. It was working okay for a while, but lately, it won't add new games and it's just easier to go to the BGG mobile website and log it that way, rather than having to try to troubleshoot it. I might try again, but right now I am ready to uninstall it.
Developer response:
Sorry to hear you're encountering issues. There was a bug when adding new games. An update is available (version 5.2.3) which should fix this, or display the problem why a game can't be added. Restarting your phone also fixes the issue.
I love this app! I have had it for over a year now and I love using it at game nights. I have never had any problems using the app, as everything runs smoothly. Being able to see personal statistics for gameplay is amazing because it allows me to keep track of what I play and when I play it. There are several different graph types, and all of the information allows you to plan ahead for future game nights or personal goals that you have. Overall, it is worth every penny you would spend!
The app synced easily with BGG. All my games are there. For $3, you get a -basic- app. Which is fine. Does everything you need it to. The main reason I bought this was for the in-depth stats, and that's an additional $3 for it. One thing I would like in a future update: Please give me the option to collapse game expansions into a folder with the base games. Yikes! It doesn't look as sleek when scrolling through Munchkin or Dominion, and there's like 10 of them that are just expansions.
Nearly perfect app. Makes recording plays a breeze and the sync with BGG is top notch. The only thing that could be improved is the ability to filter plays for viewing stats. For instance, I'd like to be able to filter plays based on expansions or variants, to see how scores vary between expansion combinations. Still, well worth the price!
This app is outstanding. I've seen plenty of complaints about "nickle and diming people" with all the small add one you can get, which I understand. I was hesitant at first too! But it's so worth it! I have maybe 400 games saved, and over 60 people. Many of these I would have forgotten about! I love seeing when I've played most in a given week, and where. The challenges are outstanding. I love love love this app. So much. Worth every penny.
Maybe I missed the detail So I recently broke down and bought the app, started recording my games and about a month later got a new phone. I thought syncing would transfer all data over but it didn't. Restarting my board game logging and group game stats... Edit: yup missed the detail. Still a bit green behind the ears. 5 star. If I could, more for the rapid response from the owner.
Developer response:
Sorry you’ve encountered an issue. If you’ve synced using Cloud sync, you only have to authorize your account to load your existing data. If you posted to BGG, you can import from BGG. If you have access to your old phone you can also export from there and import on the new one. For additional support, contact info can be found in Settings.
I love this app to death, and the newest update is great, but I do have one complaint. Managing stats would be infinitely easier if you could split roles into subsections and assign players multiple roles in a game. There have been so many games where this info would have made for amazing data. Otherwise, the app is more or less perfect! Thank you devs!
Developer response:
Thanks for your feedback! Adding multiple roles is on the wishlist.
Makes tracking your board games and plays a snap, would also highly recommend the additional challenges and insights modules you can purchase from within the app. The challenges have helped me to play games that would otherwise sit on the shelf. The stats it provides also give you insight into your games, such as if one faction wins more often, or they let you know when you got a personal high score even though you may have lost a game, which is always appreciated as a consolation prize.
Love this app and love recording all our plays on it, though some things I certainly wish were better. As a data junkie by trade, the dashboarding and general visualisation options are both mediocre and do things in such a way that I reckon the developers aren't data experts. Case in point: It's got pie plots, folks. Pie plots and bar plots and a couple rough timeseries plots that don't add anything. That's about it. However: I still love it. The integration with BGG is especially lovely.
Its a good app with some flaws. I'd give it a 5/5 if i could sync with friends and anytime we play a game together one of us added it and we'd all get the option to add it. Or it would auto add and i could delete if i wanted. One of the 2. Thanks! I saw you can send the plays, which is great, just wish it was a tad easier. 😀 love the app otherwise though.
Developer response:
Thank you for your review. It is possible to send a play file of one or more plays, that other people can import, so only one person has to log the plays. You can read more about this here: https://www.bgstatsapp.com/2022/06/01/you-can-share-play-files-with-others/
