Users have mixed feelings about the D&D Beyond app, appreciating its organization, character creation features, and access to rulebooks, but expressing significant dissatisfaction with frequent glitches, the inability to buy individual content components, high costs, lack of offline access, and issues following recent updates.
Works well, I used it for several years now, and it's got third party publishers added, but the recent wizards of the coast actions makes me wary of buying digital things. Yes they backtracked twice now but I don't think they're trustworthy anymore. So I can't recommend you use anything other than the basic free version, which only has the bare bones basic races and class features, so you might as well find another program. (That I won't list because wotc likes to nuke sites)
Before, you could find a book, then look for a specific class or race you wanted to play as and buy that individual product for only a couple of dollars. That was taken away, and now you're forced to purchase the entire book, which is obviously much more expensive. Now, they're going to force players to use the new system they're coming out with. When they could easily introduce the new system while letting players keep the stuff they purchased from the old system.
A tool for extracting money from players first and everything else second. Best features are that it's tied to a homebrew repository so you can browse options others have made and import them directly and you can see the status of the other characters in your campaign so your buddy's girlfriend that wants to be included, but doesn't actually want to play doesn't bog everything down as bad. Be prepared to bleed cash for every bit of it though.
The overall help and organization of the character sheets are great, most of the time. But in order for you to actually fully utilize this apps/website to its full potential, it REQUIRES YOU TO PURCHASE ANY AND ALL BOOKS related to any character build you make and any items(weapons, gear, magic, spells, etc...) in order for you to even know that they exist, let alone adding them to your sheet without having to essentially entering a manual override entry that doesn't mesh with your sheet
Overall it's really nice to have an app that allows you to have all of your character information easily accessible and trackable, not having to worry about updating character sheets, and making NPCs very easy. However, they really need to fix the app instead of focusing so much on 2024 release. The app is constantly glitching, which has even caused me to not buy the DMG 2024 due to issues a friend of mine has been having regarding it, and I wish my characters would update the stats when changed
DLCs are not available with new 2024 upgrade. Ive purchased several different books on D&D Beyond - all which worked perfectly fine initially. Now I am unable to create any new characters with the DLC books... I bought Grim Hollow... I can no longer access it in character creation. Rune Knight is also inaccessible in character creation. Ive tried on the website and mobile; thinking it may just be an app problem. Neither work. Ive checked that my membership is still active... it is.
I absolutely love the app. Just needs better summon management UI, The Inventory not loading bug to be fully resolved, and some QoL like adding in some rollables in a lot of none "to hit" spells like Spirit Guardians. But I'd rate 5 stars even without QoL, that inventory not loading bug as a DM is such a huge inconvenience. Especially without a separate in app glossary while in a source book for looking up items or quick referring npc stat blocks
After the swap to the 2024 rules, the app has been somewhat more cumbersome to use at times, and the updates have made it harder to use older characters. The format for books bought are better on PC to read than on mobile, as the interface is somewhat underwhelming. If not for the aforementioned complaints, it still works okay.
Exploitative. New players just trying to get evening straight in my head and build a character on app that I've been using. I can't add my sub class (assassin) without buying their stupid digital info. I already own a physical copy of the player's guide. I'm not buying another. Every little piece of this app costs money. Not for the casual at all.
The app and the website don't share the same information even though I am logged in to the same account and have purchased content. For example, on the website it has all the spells listed out that I could have as a druid but it doesn't on the app. Its extremely frustrating as a player and it needs to be fixed.
